Purchasing roofing services

Door-to-door sales. Some roofing companies often drive through neighborhoods and knock on doors to sell their services.  The sales pitch usually sounds something like this: "We are going to be doing some work in your neighborhood this week, and I noticed you need a new roof.  Since I'll have all my equipment and workers in the neighborhood anyway, I can give you an unbeatable price.  But the price is only good this week when we will be in the neighborhood."  The pitch forces the homeowner to make a quick decision, so as not to miss the "unbeatable price."  Unfortunately, many homeowners agree to the deal before ever getting a second opinion or adequately investigating the company's reputation.  No matter how good the price, do not buy a roof from an unknown company selling door to door.  Instead, politely thank them for their concern and get a second opinion from a reputable company.

Comparing quotes. The first step in hiring a roofing company is to get written quotes.  Remember, sometimes a straight price comparison is insufficient.  For example, if one company is offering a 20-year shingle while another company is offering a 40-year shingle, you must do a few calculations to perform the comparison.  Additionally, many homeowners have found that quotes that seem too good to be true usually are too good to be true.  Some less-reputable companies may offer an incredibly low price by taking questionable shortcuts.  Click here for additional consumer tips.

Insurance.  Check the insurance of every company doing work at your home.  A company should carry both workers' compensation and liability insurance.  Because of the dangers inherent in working on the roof, workers' compensation and liability insurance are a significant cost to a roofing company.  Since the cost of the insurance is high, some companies do not carry it.  This practice is a short cut some companies take to underbid the competition.  Click here for more information on insurance.

Roofing companies

Since heavy rains expose more roofing problems, the roofing industry is highly cyclical.  After a heavy rain, the best roofers are quite busy and may have a backlog.  During dry spells, roofers are usually less busy.  If you experience a roofing problem just after a heavy rain, be patient.  If a roofer has no work immediately following a heavy rain, there may be a good reason.  Carefully check out such a company before hiring it.  Remember, many homeowners have paid twice for their roofs: once to have it done by a less-reputable contractor, and a second time to have it redone correctly by a reputable one.

Some high-quality roofing contractors focus exclusively on roof replacements and do little or no repair work.  Some companies do repair work at all times, and others do repair work only during the slow times.  The repair department is typically the first place to get backed up after a heavy rain.

The Home Reports research again identified many roofing companies to avoid.  Fortunately, our research also identified some very good roofing companies.
