Clogs in the main sewer line.

Broken seals, joints, or pipe sections are the primary cause of most sewer line clogs. These breaks allow roots to penetrate and grow in the line. From a trees perspective, a sewer line is a great source of water and nutrients. As the roots grow in the line, they gradually fill it and block the flow of water and waste. The only way to remove all of the roots from the line is to replace it, which is very expensive. In many cases, enough of the roots can be cut from the inside of the line with a sewer machine to open up the flow. Unfortunately, because damaged roots can grow back in a fertile environment, the line often re-clogs. Furthermore, because some partially-cut roots tend to shift position, the line may re-clog almost immediately. If the sewer line re-clogs after the sewer machine cuts the roots, you may be better off replacing the line instead of investing more money in additional rooter attempts. Remember that cutting the roots out of a sewer line only treats the symptom of the real problem, which is either a broken seal, joint, or pipe section.

Shutting off the water

Shutting off the water is an important action to take in an emergency. Most homes have a main water shutoff valve located adjacent to the water meter. This valve can be used to prevent water from flowing into the house. All family members should know where the valve is located and how to use it in an emergency. The valve should be periodically checked to ensure proper function. Additionally, most fixtures, such as toilets and sinks, have individual shutoff valves located in their supply lines. These valves shut off water to the fixture without shutting off water to other parts of the house.

Digging in the yard

Replacing the main sewer line or the main water supply line requires digging a trench in the yard. Homeowners requiring either of these repairs should clarify, in writing if necessary, the condition of the yard once work is complete. Some homeowners are unhappily surprised at the yards appearance after the work is done. Before digging work can start in your yard, the Utilities Protection Center must be contacted at 770-623-4344 to locate and mark underground lines. This process should be completed within 72 hours of your call, excluding weekends and holidays. Until the utilities mark their lines, the plumbing company cannot start digging.

Plumbing contractors

Plumbers, like any contractor working at the home, should carry both workers compensation insurance and liability insurance. Click here for more information on insurance. Due to the nature of plumbing repairs, it is impossible for any company to make every customer happy every time. However, some companies have far better track records than others.
