Shutting off the water

Shutting off the water is an important action to take in an emergency.  Most homes have a main water shutoff valve located adjacent to the water meter.  This valve can be used to prevent water from flowing into the house.  All family members should know where the valve is located and how to use it in an emergency.  The valve should be periodically checked to ensure it's functioning properly.  Additionally, most fixtures, such as toilets and sinks, have individual shutoff valves located in their supply lines. 

Clogged drains

Many types of clogs can be avoided by using common sense.  For example, do not pour grease down a drain, and do not flush larger items, such as feminine hygiene products, down the toilet.  Until the extent of a clogged drain problem is understood, do not use the plumbing system.  For example, if the main drain to the street sewer is blocked, anything going into an upstairs toilet may end up on the basement floor.
