Common masonry projects

Brick mailboxes. The classic brick mailbox is a common fixture for many area homes.  Brick mailboxes consist of a metal mailbox surrounded and supported by a brick and mortar pillar.  The crown of the structure should also be brick.  Because mortar is a porous material that often cracks, pure mortar crowns are inferior to brick crowns in quality.

Patios. Two methods of patio construction are common.  The first method involves pouring a concrete foundation, letting it set, and then attaching bricks or stone to the concrete with mortar.  The second method involves laying down a sand bed and placing bricks or interlocking pavers directly down onto the sand bed with no mortar.

Some contractors attempt a third or hybrid method.  They place the bricks or pavers on a sand bed and then put mortar between them.  This hybrid method is not recommended, because bricks sitting on sand move slightly with normal use.  Small amounts of movement are sufficient to break up the mortar joints and create a repair problem.  If you want mortar joints, you should insist on a concrete foundation.

Outdoor fireplaces. A relatively new trend, outdoor fireplaces are growing in popularity.  They provide a unique focal point to landscaping and enhance the character and the usefulness of an outdoor living space.  Outdoor fireplaces are an excellent investment, since they enable homeowners to enjoy their yards even in the cooler months.  A custom-built fireplace can be tailor-made to suit the homeowner's unique landscaping.

Fire pits. Fire pits are contained areas to build an open fire.  Available in wood- or gas-burning options, fire pits can be built-in or portable.  They can be finished in a variety of materials, most commonly concrete, stone, or brick.  With no side enclosures, a fire in a fire pit can be enjoyed from any angle.

Built-in fireplaces. Built-in fireplaces are full-scale fireplaces with a hearth and chimney.  A built-in outdoor fireplace completes the feel of an outdoor "room" with the look of a traditional indoor fireplace.  A sturdy, permanent feature, fireplaces are usually constructed with a steel frame, and common finishes include brick, tile, stone, or concrete.
